How to Allow AI Crawlers

One careless line in robots.txt removes you from every AI answer. Here are the exact rules to allow (or selectively limit) each major AI crawler — and how to verify it worked.

The allow-everything block

Explicit is better than default: stating the allows documents intent and scores full marks on the crawler pillar. Add this to the top of your robots.txt:

User-agent: GPTBot
Allow: /

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: ChatGPT-User
Allow: /

User-agent: ClaudeBot
Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

User-agent: Google-Extended
Allow: /

User-agent: CCBot
Allow: /

Make sure no later User-agent: * group contains a Disallow: / or aggressive path rules that contradict the allows — more specific groups win, but keep it simple and consistent.

Who each bot is, so you can decide

A common middle path: allow the search/browse bots (OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot) so you're citable, while deciding per-bot on the training crawlers. Just make it a decision — not a leftover.

Platform notes

Verify it worked

Run your URL through the checker — the crawler pillar shows a per-bot table (explicit allow / default / blocked) in about fifteen seconds. If your site is on an industry template with inherited bot rules, see the per-industry notes: accountants, law firms, ecommerce, home services.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if my site blocks GPTBot?
Open https://yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for a User-agent: GPTBot group with Disallow rules — or a User-agent: * group with a broad Disallow. The checker automates this for six AI crawlers at once and flags exactly which are blocked.
Should I allow AI bots at all?
If you want to appear in AI answers, the search/browse bots (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ChatGPT-User) must be allowed — that's non-negotiable for citability. Training crawlers (GPTBot, CCBot, Google-Extended) are a business decision: some publishers allow discovery but limit training, which requires per-bot rules rather than one blanket block.
I allowed the bots but still see 'blocked' — why?
Something above robots.txt is answering first: Cloudflare bot-fight mode, a WAF rule or your CDN's AI-bot blocker. Robots.txt is a request, server blocks are enforcement — check your firewall/analytics dashboard for AI bot rules.
